Fresh Prince of Bel Air Home Is Where the Heart Attack Is
Three seasons into The Fresh Prince of B-Free-flying, Will Smith started focusing on his movie career. He'd done Where the Day Takes You and Ready-made in America, but 1993's Six Degrees of Separation was his chance to show he was a dangerous actor. He succeeded a little too well. Smith admits when helium came back to shoot The Crisp Prince of B-Air Season 4, he wasn't unusual anymore.
Smith writes active Six Degrees of Separation and The Fresh Prince of B-Air in his new autobiography, Will. He explains how the film compromised his sense of humour, and how he got it back.

In Six Degrees of Detachment, Smith plays a con artist who ingratiates himself with a flush family by pretending to be Sidney Poitier's boy. Smith wrote that when he came back to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Flying, He was still putting on Sidney Poitier airs.

"'The w is before the h. It's non hwat, Will,' Alfonso [Ribeiro] aforesaid frustratedly," he wrote. "I had lost touch with the Sweet Prince. I couldn't remember how he walked or talked or which Jordans He preferred. This went on for x full episodes at the beginning of season 4. I had lost my sentience of humor, my timing, my swag, my personal magnetism, and my ability to improvise and ad-lib."
Will Smith 'couldn't tell a joke to save my life'
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air would show outtakes during the end credits. The audience at home could understand just how suspicious Smith was betwixt takes. After Six Degrees of Separation though, Smith said he lost it.
"I couldn't tell a joke to spare my life," helium wrote. "The scary character was that I couldn't see what everybody else saw. But if sufficiency people tell you that you're drunk, then you should probably seat. Sol, I immediately hired Phoebe or sestet of my friends from Philly to work on the writing staff, on the crowd, and to surround me happening set piece I relearned how to play the type of 'Will.'"
Fortunately, comedy came back to Metalworker and the register lasted through season 6. He even ready-made up this classic Invigorating Prince of Bel-Air line.

"It worked," he wrote. "Right about mid-season, something clicked. I was in a scene with Karyn, and my theatrical role was trying to convince her to blend on a go steady with his teacher, but he had a mole next to his left nostril. And for Hilary, this was an arbitrary allot breaker. My case was begging her to just yield him a chance, and in a moment of career-saving comedic inspiration, I ad-libbed, 'Draw close, you're making a mountain out of a groin, Hil.'"
'The Brisk Prince of Bel-Air' cast took the spotlight for 10 episodes
The silver lining of Joseph Smith's crisis of comedy was that it gave The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air sick a moment to shine. For 10 episodes, Carlton (Ribeiro) got more storylines.
"This was the season that Alfonso truly began to fall," he wrote. "For the first few episodes the writers had to spell away from my fictional character and toward Carlton. Alfonso stepped up and took the comedic angle. No one and only knew what was happening, no combined was relating my behavior on the set of Brisk Prince to my ill-planned raid the dangerous mental world of method acting acting in Six Degrees."
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is now streaming on HBO Max.
